About CEST – Central European Summer Time

CEST is, as the name implies, the time zone observed by Central Europe during the summer months. CEST is +2 hours ahead of UTC. Note that Portugal and the UK are not on CEST but instead observe GMT (or, in the summer BST – British Summer Time) and that Eastern Europe (every country from Finland and South) observe Eastern European Summer Time.

Countries using CEST:

All countries in Western Europe, except Portugal and the UK, observe Central European Summer Time. This includes Germany, Sweden, Italy, Spain, Croatia, Montenegro and Gibraltar to name a few.

Example of cities observing Central European Summer Time:

The list is long but includes Berlin, Oslo, Madrid, Rome, Tirana, Amsterdam, Paris, Warsaw, Bern, Geneva and Copenhagen.

Daylight saving time and summer time:

CEST is the summer time of CET – Central European Time and is observed between the last Sunday of March and the last Sunday of October each year. The rest of the year these countries are on CET.

About IST - Indian Standard Time

Indian Standard Time, or IST for short, is the timezone of the Indian subcontinent. It is 3.5h ahead of GMT – so when the clock is 12 noon in India it is 8.30 in the morning in Delhi and Mumbai.

Countries using IST:

India, Sri Lanka

Example of cities observing it:

Delhi, Colombo, Kolkata and Mumbai

Summer time and Daylight saving time:

This timezone does not observe daylight saving time so the time difference always stay the same. You however need to pay attention to if the other time zone is observing DST as this will make a difference.

Other:

IST can also refer to Irish Standard Time or Israeli Standard time, but most of the times it is India that is being referred to – just make sure to double check this before you send that calendar invite!
